Answers to common questions about attic storage.
Will I need council approval or a building permit?
No. Attic storage is a non-habitable space, and our installation does not alter your home’s structure. We install a storage platform over existing ceiling joists without cutting or modifying the roof framing.
Does storage affect my insulation?
It can if it is done poorly. Boards laid directly on insulation can squash it and reduce its performance. We use a raised system that keeps insulation intact and leaves ventilation paths clear.
Does my roof type matter? I have trusses.
Yes. Truss roofs have tighter clearances than traditional pitched roofs, so storage options can be more limited. We assess each roof space before quoting. A basic platform can often be fitted, although dust-proofing may not be possible.
How much does it cost?
Every roof space is different, so each attic needs a custom design. Fill out our contact form for an accurate quote for your needs.
What shouldn’t I store up there?
Heavy items such as furniture, tools, or weights should stay at ground level. Items sensitive to heat or humidity are also a poor fit. This includes electronics, photos, documents, candles, vinyl records, and food. Fuel, gas bottles, and flammable liquids should never be stored in a roof space.
How much weight can I store?
Our attic platforms are rated for a static load of 70 kg per square metre. This rating does not include the weight of anyone accessing the space.
How long does installation take?
A simple static storage space can often be completed in one day. Timing depends on the size of the storage space.
How do I know if my roof space is suitable?
We assess your roof space as part of the process and let you know what is possible. If we find that your roof space is unsuitable for storage, there is no charge for the assessment.
How do I keep dust and pests out?
Choose a sealed, dust-proof option if you want your belongings protected. Otherwise, store items in sealed storage boxes.
Can you add lighting and power?
Yes. If you need lighting or power, we can coordinate the work from start to finish. A licensed electrician completes the electrical work after the attic installation and provides an electrical certificate.
